In the past, you could copy part of an image in Preview, paste it into another image, then use the corners of the pasted image to adjust the size of the image. However, there was no way to make sure that the image was not contorted when you resized it. Fortunately, this has been fixed in Snow Leopard. Simply hold the shift key when resizing the pasted image to keep the image constrained to its original proportions.
