This tip is specifically for you desktop owners. If you want an easy way to sleep your Mac without having to use the Apple menu, there's a neat little option in the Energy Saver preferences to enable sleeping your mac by hitting the power button. To do this, open the Energy Saver preference, click on the "Options" button, and check the box next to "Allow power button to sleep the computer".

You can also sleep by invoking the shortcut command-option-eject (pressed simultaneously)
That only works if you have an Apple keyboard.
