Print Directly From Finder

Mac Tricks and Tips has pointed out a great way to save time printing documents from Finder is by putting a printer directly on your Mac's desktop. Here's how:

Step 1: Open the "Print & Fax" preference pane in System Preferences.

Step 2: Click-and-drag one, or all, of the printer icons from the sidebar to your desktop.

If you would prefer your printer icon to be in the Finder window's sidebar or toolbar - like I do - you can drag the alias created in step 2 to both places. Then, when it's there, just delete the printer off your desktop.

To print using this method, just drag-and-drop the document directly onto the printer icon. When you do, the application for reading the document will be opened and the document will be printed. While it would be inconvenient to have to close applications after printing something, it's still a very convenient shortcut.

  1. Anonymous asked: "Is this Leopard only? Does it work in Tiger as well? I have Tiger and cannot drag the printer to the desktop."

I do not know. However, I would suggest printing something, then as it prints, clicking on the printer icon that appears in the dock. Then Cmd-drag the printer icon to your desktop.
