I dislike using icon view – especially for my Applications folder – because my icons are usually very disorganized. It finally occurred to me that I can sort my icons in the same way my items in column view are sorted. (So I've been a bit slow as of late...
To do this, open up the folder you want to sort and switch it to icon view. (Or hit Cmd-1) Then, hit Cmd-J (or go to View > Show View Options) and change the "Arrange By:" menu to "Name" (or whichever method of sorting you prefer.)
You can also right-click on the background of the icon view and select the "Arrange By" option to temporarily change the settings. (Holding the option key will change "Arrange By" to "Keep Arranged By" as pictured below.)
