Remove Blemishes Using iPhoto

If you took a picture and some small details got in there that you didn't want, it's possible to remove them using iPhoto.

Say what?

A feature that I discovered in iPhoto relatively recently is the retouch tool. The retouch tool allows you to remove small blemishes from your pictures.

To use the tool, open the image in iPhoto. Then, go into edit mode (double click it or select it and then click on the "edit" button at the bottom of the main window).

Once in edit mode, click on the retouch button.

Now that you've activated the retouch tool, you'll want to set the size for it. It works by taking the area surrounding the center of the circle and "mixing" it together to get the average of that circle. At which point, it fills the center of the circle with that average. With this in mind, you want the circle slightly bigger than the size of the blemish.

Once you've selected the size, click on the blemish in your picture. I've discovered that it often works best if you click several times in the same place.

Repeat the above process for each of the blemishes in your picture and pretty soon, you'll go from this:

  1. what can you do if you overdo the retouching? I was mucking around and blotted out my eyes in a lovely pic of me and my son! Is there a reverse button?

  2. Either use Undo (Cmd-Z) or go to the Help menu and search "revert" and you should be able to revert to the original image.
