Many people (including myself) complain about not being able to have the date in the menu bar clock. Somebody even wrote an application to do this. However, what we weren't aware of is that there is a way to do this built into mac. Albeit, not easily, but, it's still there. Here's how you can achieve this effect.
Step 1: Open up System Preferences and go to the International Pane.
Step 2: Click on the "Formats" tab.
Step 3: Click on the "Customize..." button for the Dates.
Step 4: Drag in what you want to have in your clock. So, if you want the day of the week, drag in the "Saturday". If you want the Day of the month, drag that in. Etc.
Step 5: Select the items you dragged in just as if they were text. Then, copy them with Cmd-C.
Step 6: To leave the date customization window, hit the Cancel button.
Step 7: Click on the "Customize..." button for the Time.
Step 8: This is very important. Change the "Snow:" menu at the top of the screen to "Medium".
Step 9: Now, paste in the elements you copied from step 5. Arrange them how you want. If you desire, you can add text such as } [ ] \ | or even "Hello World!"
Step 10: When I added the day of the week, it appeared twice in the menu bar.
To get rid of the second one, go to the Date & Time preferences, click on the "Clock" and uncheck the "Show the day of the week" option.
That's it! You should now be able to tell the date without having to activate dashboard.
