Put the Date in the Menu Bar

Many people (including myself) complain about not being able to have the date in the menu bar clock. Somebody even wrote an application to do this. However, what we weren't aware of is that there is a way to do this built into mac. Albeit, not easily, but, it's still there. Here's how you can achieve this effect.

Step 1: Open up System Preferences and go to the International Pane.

Step 2: Click on the "Formats" tab.

Step 3: Click on the "Customize..." button for the Dates.

Step 4: Drag in what you want to have in your clock. So, if you want the day of the week, drag in the "Saturday". If you want the Day of the month, drag that in. Etc.

Step 5: Select the items you dragged in just as if they were text. Then, copy them with Cmd-C.

Step 6: To leave the date customization window, hit the Cancel button.

Step 7: Click on the "Customize..." button for the Time.

Step 8: This is very important. Change the "Snow:" menu at the top of the screen to "Medium".

Step 9: Now, paste in the elements you copied from step 5. Arrange them how you want. If you desire, you can add text such as } [ ] \ | or even "Hello World!"

Step 10: When I added the day of the week, it appeared twice in the menu bar.

To get rid of the second one, go to the Date & Time preferences, click on the "Clock" and uncheck the "Show the day of the week" option.

That's it! You should now be able to tell the date without having to activate dashboard.

Hi, another way to see date on the desktop is having iCal icon in Dock - it shows the current date even when it's not started.

brilliant. great work.

While that does work, I currently have more room in my menu bar, and I'm trying to not use the dock as much.

Good tip. There's also MenuCalendarClock if you feel like dropping the month (you probably remember that) but want to make it clear what number is telling you the date and what numbers are showing the time..

the steps were clear and i got the result i wanted on my menu bar... BUT... I just realized it kinda screwed up my iCal entry set up... check it out in the link

now the dates are doubled and there is no am or pm in the time...

how can this be fixed?

Unfortunately, this is one of the negative side-affects of doing this. Also unfortunate is that I don't think there are any known solution.

You'll probably want to check out the other suggestions in the comments.

@Mac Tipper

thanks, i guess i'll have to settle for ziizii's tip... not bad, all i have to do is drag mouse down to the dock and take a peek at the date from iCal's icon... takes another one and a half seconds but it will do, better than having iCal's time set-up get wierd
