A short time ago, I wrote of an applescript which will change the brightness of your screen. While this applescript is good for setting your screen brightness to something specific (three-quarters for example) there is actually a shortcut built into mac which will sleep your display.
To activate this, simply hit Ctrl-Shift-Eject.
Granted, there is a problem with this. That problem is that if you don't take your fingers off the keys fast enough, you'll reactivate your screen. Also, any mouse movement/key press will brighten your screen. So, if you're looking to hide what's on your screen, I would suggest sticking with the applescript.

I'm a big fan of keyboard commands but using more than two keys to do something is kind of a pain. So I find that just setting up a hot corner to sleep the display is a lot easier. YMMV.
